What a wonderful time I had yesterday. Thanks to Kayla, Jordan, Meg and Ciara...you are great models! We had a few folks in downtown Albany wondering what in the world was going on. Lots of stares and so much laughter. It was amazing!

We trashed a few prom dresses and made some great memories and wonderful art as we did so.

Why keep that beautiful gown stuffed in a closet somewhere never to be worn again...lets make a beautiful keepsake!

Senior Portrait Scholarships (Albany High 2010 Senior) available through Fran’s Photo Designs . Senior Portrait Scholarships for two deserving seniors graduating with the Albany, Class of 2010. Each scholarship will cover a Portrait Session and a portrait package, which includes Sitting Fee, 1 (Favorite Pose) 8x10 , 6 4x6’s, and 40 wallets .
You must submit an essay (250 words or less) stating why you or the person you are nominating deserves to receive one of the scholarships. Include your name and contact information as well as the nominees name and contact information. Awards will be based on either financial need or personal circumstances. Applications are being accepted through May 15th , 2009. Winners will be contacted June 7th 2009.

Have I mentioned how much I enjoy sports? However, I must confess I truly love, love, love watching my kids and their friends compete. I took a couple photos this past week that I feel I must share with everyone. The girls giving each other a pep talk, Coach Tony getting the gals ready for the run with words of great wisdom I am sure. The last photo is of Jake look at his and his competitors face....Is that sheer determination or what. Albany Comets Cross Country Rocks!

Two deserving Seniors from Albany high school have been selected to receive this years portrait scholarships. I want to thank everyone who wrote nomination letters. The two selected are a great example of the wonderful community in which we live!
This program has been such a success that I am already making plans for next year!

Senior Photo Fun

My theme continues to echo, why settle for the ordinary...but seriously why should anyone settle for stale and boring.

Recently I had the honor of photographing Tyler. Tyler is an Athlete as well as an excellent student and musician.

I love telling a story with my photos. I know Tyler personally and have had fun taking photos of him at some of his sporting events (mom provided a couple of the action shots to fill in the gaps), so adding them to his Senior Portrait just seemed right.

When you come to my studio bring everything with you that matters...shoes, basketballs, bats, letter jackets, special awards, musical instruments, class ring...It makes for a great memory.

How To Prepare For Your Portrait Session

What to wear for:

Group or family portraits

* Wear similar tones of clothing
* Think in black and white tones; if everyone wears dark blue and one person wears white, the eye will be drawn to the person wearing white. If there's a reason that one person should stand out, then do it. If not, change your color selections.
* Denim in any color for pants and jackets works well. It's classic, it's informal and it comes in lots of great colors. Best of all, it never goes out of style.
* Groom your hands and nails; they usually end up in some pictures.
* Avoid patterns, logos, branding, and busy designs Stripes, plaids, checks and busy patterns like paisley all tend to be distracting.
* Avoid anything shiny or reflective ~ Avoid large, shiny objects like belt buckles, bold jewelry and reflective watches.
* Unless your watch has a story, it's best to take it off during your portrait session. In fact, it's best to take it off well before you arrive so the marks on your wrist have a chance to fade.
* Classic, elegant jewelry like pearls always looks appropriate.
* Beware the color red ~ It attracts attention! If you want to stand out on purpose, wear red. If you choose red for everybody, it's best if the reds match...

Portrait Tips for Women

Wear long sleeves, or at least three-quarter length sleeves.
Choose v-necks, square-necks and turtlenecks.
Avoid cowlnecks and other floppy necklines.
Avoid buttondowns and crewnecks unless you have a very long neck.
Classic jewelry, like pearls, always makes a great choice.
Blouses with collars that open and lie flat look great over a jacket.
Layers look great. A single-breasted jacket over a tight-fit, square-neck top looks fabulous.
Fitted tops always look better than loose-fitting clothing.
No matter what you choose, make sure you can cross your arms comfortably without the shoulders riding up.

Portrait Tips for Men

The more formal the portrait, the darker your colors must be. You can get away with light colors for an informal portrait or location shots in the summer on the beach.
Turtlenecks look great, especially under jackets.
Do not wear a jacket that is much lighter than what you're wearing underneath it.
Crewnecks sweaters or layers work fine on men. Don't be afraid to wear white t-shirts under buttondown shirts.

Tips For Everyone:
*arrive early - be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get here - you won't want to be rushed.

*haircuts - schedule a haircut no sooner than five days before your session, to give it a chance to "fill in" a bit. don't try a radically different haircut or style - your hair should be the way your friends and family are used to seeing it.

*choosing the right clothing - while there are no "rules" about what to wear, here are a few suggestions on what to bring for each different session choice:Avoid patterns, logos, branding, and busy designs Stripes, plaids, checks and busy patterns like paisley all tend to be distracting

*essensital indoor - some seniors dress up a little more for their studio portraits, but more importantly than the "formalness" of your outfit is the style. simple and solid colors work best for this session. these are the portraits that will hang on your walls for a long time, and you don't want the outfit to overpower the image.

*basic outdoor - outdoor portraits should be casual, and so should your outfits. this is the session for jeans, khakis, shorts, tanks and tees. the best colors outdoors are blues and earth tones (olive, green, tan, brown, etc.). whites and reds do not work well outdoors.

*bring a friend - if you are bringing a friend, sibling, or significant other, please keep your outfits in the same tonal range.

* scheduling your photo session - make sure you schedule early, as the best times go fast. if you are planning on an outdoor session, the best light of the day is in theEarly morning and late afternoon and we only have one 9:30 am and 4:30pm time slot available.

* bring plenty of clothing changes. it is better to bring it and not use it, then leave it at home and wish you had brought it. we do ask all seniors to bring a long sleeved black shirt. other ideas include, hats, belt buckles, t-shirts, dance costumes, dresses. if you can wear it, bring it along!

*Tips on glasses

Glasses represent a particular challenge in portraits. The lenses tend to distort the face, producing a less than pleasing effect. Consider bringing a pair of frames without lenses (ask your optometrist if you could borrow a pair without frames) or be prepared to remove the lenses from your existing glasses. You might also consider a portrait without glasses. In general I know that you will not be pleased with portraits taken through the lenses of your existing glasses, so please be prepared to have your portraits taken either without glasses or without lenses in your frames. If there is no other choice I will do my best to not get flash in them although there is no guarantee.

Happy 4th of July.

I thought it would be fun to share some dance photos I took recently.

Ciara has been dancing for as long as I can remember. She is fun to photograph. Ballet is beautiful and the costumes make for great photos. The Tap photo on the far left was enlarged to a 20 x30 poster...so much fun.

Jenna wanted fun photos to remember her year of hip hop...Why settle for ordinary? With costumes like these it seemed a shame just to stick them in front of a boring backdrop....so we went with wild and crazy.

Trash That Prom Dress

Recently, Meghan and I went outside to participate in Trash that Dress. These types of photos are becoming more and more popular...many photographers offer 'Trash that Wedding Dress' portraits. It may sound insane, but think about it. How many times do you wear those formals...once! That's it. Why not get some pictures to remember the fun by? The gowns are gorgeous and speak volumes. Why not climb a tree in a hoop skirt and tennis shoes? play in a creek a mud hole, Or as Meghan did, play in the sprinkler. Too much fun! I will be adding photos that I took during our fun day. Well, this week has been extremely hectic. My eldest daughter Meg graduated from High School on Sunday! What a whirlwind sort of day. The weather started and ended with severe storms but the actual graduation and Megs party was quite lovely. It was a day of mixed emotions ~ great pride ~ happiness ~sprinkled with moment of sadness. For those who know me...yes, I cried like a baby, ha!

She is a great kid and plans on attending OshKosh (one of our neighbors went to school there and called it OshVegas in her card...should I be concerned????) in the fall and will major in Anthropology. She is an amazing young lady!

*You can do this one of three ways...first you can use your credit card and order it directly from the photo site (they will send the photos directly to your home).

*You could send (or if you want hand deliver) me a check ( I also accept cash, ha) and I will call you when they are delivered to the studio...Just jot down the size of the photo you want, and the description number/ID that is beside each photo. There is no tax or SH charges! I cover it!

*If you live out of town or would like me to ship them to your home send a check and include $5.00 to cover SH. Again jot down the photo size and description ID.

Sports Photography.....Love It!

In this business I get the opportunity to meet some amazing people.

I love working in the studio and taking portraits that my clients can treasure for a life time. However, when I get the chance to grab my camera and head outside to a sporting event my spirit soars. I love sports and there really is nothing quiet as satisfying as capturing an athlete in all their glory. I get to capture raw courage and determination....What a great job I have!

This is Sydney. I love the determination I see in her face. She is awesome. I have had the opportunity to photograph her several times and she is loved by the camera!
